Marco Polo was a merchant and explorer who traveled throughout the Far East and China for much of his life. His stories were the basis for what much of Europe knew about Ancient China for many years. He lived from 1254 to 1324. Where did he grow up?

Polo entertained the other prisoners with his adventures in China. Rusticello wrote them down in French. This is how Polo’s accounts were created. In 1299, Genoa and Venice declared peace.

Marco Polo’s journey to China was itself inspired by his father’s and uncle’s traveling to the country after listening to their stories. His father and uncle, who had been to China before during their trading on the Silk Road, had one time visited Kublan Khan who was an emperor in the Yuan Dynasty.
