Venetian explorer, Marco Polo had a great impact on the area of what is now modern day China. Because of his exploration of the area, as well as many other areas in the East, such as Indonesia.

Marco Polo was married to Donata Badoer and had three daughters, Fantina, Bellela and Moreta. The couple was married in 1300, and were married for 24 years. After returning from China, Marco Polo was a prisoner of war in Genoa. He married Donata Badoer one year after his release from prison. Donata was the daughter of Vitale Badoer, a merchant.

In China, the Polos were well received by Kublai khan. As Marco Polo immersed himself in Chinese culture, and was a gifted linguist, he quickly gained favor with the Great Khan. As a result, he was appointed as a special envoy of the Yuan court. This enabled him to travel to various parts of Asia such as Tibet, Burma and India.

Polo trekked through deserts, outran ruthless marauders, and climbed mountains to reach his destination—the palace of Kublai Khan. This biography recounts how Marco Polo served the great Khan for seventeen years recording his adventures in exotic lands. The record of Polo’s travels inspired future explorers to find new passages to Asia.

Although the pope did not grant the request, the Polo brothers, in search of further profit and adventure, set out to return to China in 1271. Since his mother had died recently, Marco Polo was taken along on the trip, marking his debut, or first appearance, as a world traveler at age seventeen.

A very descriptive book about the travels of Marco Polo, his father and uncle to China. It describes the incredible wealth and power of China's emperors in great detail, and tries to separate fact from fiction in Marco's book. All in all, I found it an informative and easy to read book.
