Poker Hand Rankings - Highest to Lowest (Best for Beginners).
POSTED Nov 11, 2016 Tom discusses the starting hand requirements in 5-card PLO8, noting how these opening ranges compare to those in 5-card PLO high.
In poker the value of the cards are as follows: Ace, can be either the highest or lowest ranked card. All other cards are ranked at face value.
The High Card: The Lowest Level of the Poker Hand Rankings Just like anything else in this world, there are things that people usually avoid. As basketball players avoid hitting blank shots, and postmen avoid delivering letters to the wrong places, poker players also avoid getting the high-card poker rank.
The rarer a hand, the stronger it is. Some poker variants use alternate hands, but the rank of hands shown below (and at right) is standard. Hands that are tied in terms of rank are decided based on the highest card in the hand. In other words, a Pair of Kings beats a Pair of Tens, and a Straight 7-8-9-10-J beats a Straight 3-4-5-6-7.
A royal flush is the highest straight of cards, all in one suit: 10-J-Q-K-A. This hand is very tough to make. Being dealt this hand in five-card stud poker will happen about once in every 649,000 hands. In five card draw (or video poker), it will happen about once in every 40,000 hands.
An ace may also be used as the lowest ranking card in a 5-high straight (5-4-3-2-A), which is also called a wheel or bicycle. Although Stud and Hold’em are played with seven cards, the best hand refers to the best five-card hand. Hand rankings are a function of probability. The rarer the hand, the more valuable it is.
